This contemporary farmstead is a courtyard dwelling measuring 500m², situated on the outskirts of Irene in Rietvlei Country Estate. It consists of three gabled blocks; the garage/storage block, an open plan kitchen/dining/living block and a bedroom block. These blocks are linked by glass and concrete walkways and arranged in such a way to form a courtyard on the southern end of home. The living and bedroom blocks are predominantly north facing with ‘larger than life’ windows and doors drawing in as much natural light as possible. The south facing façade of the homestead is anchored by a big open braai-patio facing the swimming pool. The walls and roofs of the home is covered with dark grey sheet metal resembling the steel structures on so many South African farms. House Mulder takes advantage of the gradual sloping site by directing the views away from the surrounding homes and in the process framing the most spectacular views on this rural setting.
