We are often contacted by clients who has spent a fortune buying an existing home, only to discover that the layout, orientation and the general planning of the home was slapped together in a ‘copy & paste’ fashion. Rooms and passages are so small that furniture hardly fit. Due to poor planning & the wrong orientation solar heat gain turns many a home into a sauna. The client’s brief was to turn the house into a more habitable home and also to incorporating a pyjama lounge & gymnasium in the design.
We linked the pyjama lounge & gymnasium (placed over the existing garage) by means of a screened-off glass corridor that’s nicely tucked into the shady part of the southern façade. A large steel box window frames the beautiful streetscape to the side of the home. Exposed trusses, pigmented concrete floors & well-placed slow combustion fireplace will provide a much needed safe-haven where the family can flock together in the evenings.
