When the owner of this beautiful small-holding first approached me with his vision of creating a safe-haven Kindergarten for kids ‘where kids can still be kids’ while at the same time offering a well-rounded educational foundation, I could not contain my excitement. The site contained three dilapidated structures used for Subsistence farming in past years. My immediate thought was to incorporate these structures into a courtyard design where the kids can play in a safe environment. All the classrooms open up into the courtyard by big sliding glass doors linking the classrooms to the outside. Once constructed this kindergarten will be filled with happy high pitched children’s voices. The construction pallet of this ‘tough as nails’ kindergarten is mild steel, timber & concrete modular blocks depicting the many farm-style structures throughout South Africa. Well insulated & exposed steel truss ceilings portray a feeling a spaciousness throughout the classrooms. Included in the design is a reception, staff offices & aftercare centre. Farmhouse Kids Kindergarten will be paradise to little minds exploring life on a kiddies-farm.
