For this competition project the owners Marie & Duncan wanted the addition of a romantic cabin for two on a beautiful and secluded 200-acre farm as part of their wellness retreat. The cabin offers romantic open plan luxury accommodation where guests can connect with nature while experiencing the hollistic therapies of the retreat. The cabin will be set of the main road through a paddock and would be accessed via a newly laid gravel road. This 63m² hideaway consist of an open plan timber frame & cladded structure overlooking the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel Range. The entire northern façade opens up onto a covered patio that includes a wood burning hot tub where guests can relax for hours on end while appreciating the spectacular view. The lightly stained exterior timber siding will weather over time with minimal maintenance. The siding’s thin, vertical timber cladding attached in a regular articulated pattern, resembles the vertical composition of surrounding the trees. Coromandel Cottage evoke Thoreau’s simple cabin in the wood where the structure takes second place to nature.
